Nobel Peace Prize 2016 winner : Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded Friday to Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos, “for his resolute efforts to bring the country’s more than 50-year-long civil war to an end.”

The decision was an unexpected one. Although President Santos and FARC guerrilla leader Rodrigo LondoƱo were originally firm favorites to win the prize, Colombia’s shock vote to reject the peace deal they brokered cast doubt on the pair’s chances.

But despite the result of the plebiscite, the Nobel committee applauded Santos for his efforts to bring “the bloody conflict significantly closer to a peaceful solution”.
