How Akhilesh Yadav won the power battle?

In the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election 2012 Samajwadi Party, led by Mulayam Singh Yadav, has emerged as the single largest party, winning 224 seats out of 403 seats, 22 seat more than what was required to form the government. The poll result have declared on 6th March 2012.

Akhilesh Yadav sworn in as the 33rd chief minister of Uttar Pradesh on 15th March 2012. For almost four and a half year, the son obeyed his father but he then decided to rebel in the Samajwadi Party. The SP Chief Mulayam's brother supported him but the son refuses to take anymore direction from his father.

Shivpal Yadav announced the merger of Quami Ekta Dal with Samajwadi Party in June 2016, hoping that the merger will help the party in strengthen the Muslim vote bank in the eastern Uttar Pradesh specially in Mau, Ghazipur and Varanasi.

The Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav was the against the merger of Quami Ekata Dal with Samajwadi Party. After the merger dispute started in the Samajwadi Party.

A sudden fued broke out in the SP family at a time when the elections in UP are just round the corner. On 30 December 2016, Akhilesh and Ram Gopal Yadav was expelled from the party by his father Mulayam Singh Yadav one day after he released a own separate list of candidates for the upcoming elections.

On the last day of the year saw that Akhilesh Yadav definitely win the intra party battle. On 31st December 2016 Akhilesh Yadav had convened the meeting of party MLAs. Earlier a day he had been expelled from the party by his father. A constitutional crisis was developing in the Uttar Pradesh.

The CM could have been required to prove majority on the floor of the house. But except those present at the meeting, 17 MLAs of Bahujan Samaj Party and seven from Congress had reached out to Akhilesh team for their support if majority required, as per media news.

But Akhilesh did not need the support. When meeting ended, he had the support of 222 party MLAs, eighteen more than the number required to prove majority in the floor of the house.

According to a party leader close to Akhilesh the December 31st meeting was held because the CM had knew that Mulayam Singh Yadav had gone to meet "a leader from a big political, rival of the SP" after advice of Amar Singh.

On the 1st January 2017 Ram Gopal Yadav called the national convention of the Samajwadi Party in Lucknow and Akhilesh Yadav elected as the national president of the Samajwadi Party in the convention, replacing his father Mulayam Singh Yadav, who latter termed the convention as illegal and said Ram Gopal Yadav have no right to call a national convention of the party.

From the Akhilesh Yadav elected as national president the Samajwadi Party splitted into two factions, one group is Akhilesh and Ram Gopal Yadav, second group Mulayam Singh Yadav and Shivpal Yadav.

Soon after the split both faction reached Election Commission of India to claim the "Cycle" symbol. First Mulayam Singh had met the EC with supporting document. Day after Mulayam met EC, the Ram Gopal Yadav also submitted affidavit of 222 MLAs, who was supporting Akhilesh faction.

The pressure on both the faction increases, after the announcement of poll date in the Uttar Pradesh by Election commission of India, to reached on any compromise. The Akhilesh Yadav had made it clear that we don't want to compromise. Therefore multiple rounds of talk held between both the faction but they could reached on any conclusion.

On Monday 9th January, 2016, a surprise statement came from Mulayam Singh Yadav in New Delhi. “Akhilesh will be the next Chief Minister. Our party is completely united. There is no question of the party breaking up,” Mr Mulayam Singh said.

Even then both faction have approached the EC to claim the 'Cycle' symbol, not it is upto EC to decide the fate of the 'Cycle' symbol.

Akhilesh Yadav has finally won the power battle in Samajwadi Party, getting the better of the some of clever politicians of India, including his father, Mulayam Singh Yadav. How did the son of political patriarch come out on top? By sending a clear message to the public that he puts party above family, and by out manoeuvring his older leader, wily opponents.

Now the main focus is shifting to alliances for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election.
The new Netaji Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow is focuing on alliance with Congress and smaller parties.

Lets wait and watch...
